A RESOLUTION concerning
The Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center
FOR the purpose of recognizing the vital resources provided by the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center; and designating the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center as the Annapolis City Ambassador to the Tall Sailing Ships and historic boats community in furtherance of the maritime heritage of Annapolis.
WHEREAS, the Department of Natural Resources has historically provided support to the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center through the provision of dock space at the historic Capt. William H. Burtis house;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center has organized and hosted visits by tall ships and historic vessels such as “Sultana”, “Maryland Dove”, “Easterner”, “Bolero”, “Silent Maid”, “When & If”, “Lady Maryland”, “Summerwind”, “Sorcerer II”, “Witchcraft”, “Lacerta”, “Sigsbee” and many other vessels that visit Annapolis on an ongoing basis;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center is working with the City to establish an annual “Up-rigging” program for tall ships in Annapolis each May, similar to the “Down-rigging” program held each fall in our sister City Chestertown, Maryland;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center has worked with Anne Arundel County Public Schools to organize and run “STEM Sailing” and “History of Sailing” programs for students;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center has provided boats, volunteers, and access to the Mayor’s Office of Hispanic Community Affairs Sailing Program, and in partnership with Annapolis Department of Recreation and Parks, support for the City’s Pop-Up Sailing Camps for underserved communities;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center has enabled community sailing experiences through its “Bull & Bear Free Sailing Program” and its role working with “SpinSheet” magazine” on “Take Someone Sailing Day”;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center, in partnership with Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating and the United States Naval Academy, has hosted the “Wounded Warrior Sailing Program”;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center, in partnership with Eastport Yacht Club and the Chesapeake Traditional Sailboat Association, has hosted the annual “Classic Wooden Boat Rendezvous”;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center has an ongoing partnership with “Pride of Baltimore II” and with Tall Sailing Ship “Lynx” for programing in May and October each year;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center is an all-volunteer organization and does not charge for its programing;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center is a respected, requested partner by the Tall Sailing Ship and historic boats community;
WHEREAS, the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center is a “Gateway to the Chesapeake Bay”;
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to recognize the vital resources provided by the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center and designate it as the Annapolis City Ambassador to the Tall Sailing Ships and historic boats community in furtherance of the maritime heritage of Annapolis.
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the City of Annapolis hereby recognizes the vital resources the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center provides to youth and underserved communities by offering sailing, STEM and other educational programs throughout the Historic Annapolis waterfront and Chesapeake Bay area.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL, that the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center, by virtue of its expertise, reputation, logistical management, established relationships and non-profit, educational and eleemosynary purpose is an ideal liaison to continue to orchestrate and administer the visitation of historic ships and related educational outreach within the City of Annapolis, and will partner with other maritime and commercial organizations in furtherance of the maritime heritage education and outreach of Annapolis.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the Annapolis Waterfront & Sailing Center is designated the Annapolis City Ambassador to the Tall Sailing Ships and historic boats community in furtherance of the maritime heritage of Annapolis.
