A RESOLUTION concerning
Authorizing the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade as an Official City of Annapolis Co-Sponsored Event
FOR the purpose of authorizing the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade as an official co-sponsored City of Annapolis event due to his importance and significance to our country and our community.

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., born January 15, 1929, dedicated his life to identifying and righting racial inequality throughout our country; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King went to India, and met with the family of Mahatma Gandhi and followed Gandhi's teachings; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King became the leader of the national campaign for Civil Rights; and

WHEREAS, when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus and was arrested, Dr. King led the Montgomery bus boycott, which led to the Supreme Court decision ruling that bus segregation was illegal; and

WHEREAS, based on Dr. King's work, the Interstate Commerce Commission banned segregation in interstate travel; and

WHEREAS, on June 23, 1962, Dr. King led a group of 125,000 people in a Freedom Walk in Detroit; and

WHEREAS, on August 28, 1963, Dr. King joined more than 250,000 people in the March on Washington and where he delivered the famous "I Have a Dream" speech; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize which he received for combating racial inequality through nonviolence; and
