A RESOLUTION concerning
Michael Anthony Peroutka
FOR the purpose of expressing the sense of the City Council's opposition to Anne Arundel County Council candidate Michael Anthony Peroutka's extremist views on civil rights and public education.

WHEREAS, Michael Anthony Peroutka is a candidate for public office in Anne Arundel County; and

WHEREAS, the highly respected Southern Poverty Law Center has deemed Mr. Peroutka to be an extremist; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Peroutka has made statements regarding his lack of support for public education that the City Council finds troubling; and

WHEREAS, the funding of public schools are a function of Anne Arundel County; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Peroutka has publicly stated he believes certain federal civil rights laws are unconstitutional; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Peroutka has said he does not support Maryland's Civil Marriage Protection Act or the voter approved referendum that was the subject of "Question 6" on the November 2012 ballot; and
WHEREAS, the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others gave their lives to ensure that we would be one nation; and
WHEREAS, if elected, Mr. Peroutka would be required to take an oath of office supporting the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Maryland; and
WHEREAS, the City Council believes the citizens of Anne Arundel County should be fully informed on Mr. Peroutka's ideology; and
WHEREAS, the City of Annapolis and its residents have an interest in who serves on the Anne Arundel County Council; and
