A RESOLUTION concerning
National Women’s History Month 2017
FOR the purpose of recognizing the month of March as National Women’s History Month and honoring the contributions of women who have served on the Annapolis City Council and in other important ways for the City of Annapolis.
WHEREAS, in 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity; and
WHEREAS, a special Presidential Proclamation is issued every year which honors the extraordinary achievements of American women; and
WHEREAS, women of every race, class, and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of the City of Annapolis in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and
WHEREAS, women have played a vital role in the history of the City of Annapolis and we are very fortunate to be able to honor local women who have been pioneers in their own right; and
WHEREAS, Ellen O. Moyer served as the first woman Mayor in the 300 year history of the City of Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, Barbara C. Neustadt was the first woman to serve on the Annapolis City Council; and
WHEREAS, Cynthia Carter was the first African-American Alderwoman to serve on the Annapolis City Council; and
WHEREAS, Classie Gillis Hoyle was the first Alderwoman to amend the City Charter to encourage use of gender-specific titles for members of the Annapolis City Council; and
WHEREAS, Regina Watkins-Eldridge is the first African-American woman to serve as the City Clerk for the City of Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to celebrate the contributions of all women, promote women’s full participation in all aspects of life, and support women’s continued advancement in remembering the celebrated women pioneers and leaders in our history, as well as those unsung women heroes of our daily lives.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the month of March is hereby recognized within the City of Annapolis as National Women’s History Month.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that this resolution shall take effect from the date of its passage.
