A RESOLUTION concerning
Sailing Vessel Maiden - Docking Fee Waiver
FOR the purpose of waiving the fees for docking the Maiden at the Annapolis City Dock on certain dates during the month of April, 2020.
WHEREAS, the organizing committee, comprised of Annapolis constituents, is requesting a docking fee waiver for the British sailing vessel Maiden, owned by the nonprofit foundation The Maiden Factor, which is scheduled to visit the Annapolis City Dock during the period of April 8-12, 2020, and again on April 17, 2020; and
WHEREAS, the Maiden is currently on a world tour and she will be open for public tours while docked in downtown Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, the Maiden was designed by Annapolis's own Bruce Farr and built in 1979 and competed in two races around the world before being purchased by Tracy Edwards, the British Skipper of a campaign that entered the first all-female crewed boat in the 1989/90 Whitbread Around the World Race; and
WHEREAS, the Maiden is being sailed around the world again with a rotating roster of all-female Skippers and crew, to raise awareness and funds for girls education, and empower women and girls worldwide; and
WHEREAS, the story of the Maiden, crew and race were featured in a 2019 documentary called Maiden, that was selected for best documentary on the shortlist of Oscar nominees and will be shown during the Annapolis Film Festival on March 29, 2020; and
WHEREAS, Annapolis is one of only five East Coast visits for this world tour and will be reaching out to local area schools and community groups including the Severn Sailing Association, Eastport Yacht Club and other regional clubs to coordinate with ...
