A RESOLUTION concerning
Condemning the Attack on the U.S. Capitol Building and our Democracy
FOR the purpose of condemning the violent attempt on January 6, 2021, to overturn a free and fair election by do-mestic terrorists at the urging of President Donald Trump; condemning the unsubstantiated al-legations of President Donald Trump and other political figures that incited the riot which led to the death of five people, including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick; offering our condo-lences to the family of Officer Sicknick; proclaiming that our democracy is resilient to such violent acts of domestic terrorism.
WHEREAS, the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol Building is unprecedented and resulted in the terrorizing of our senators, congressional representatives and staff persons, the theft of personal possessions, and the desecration of our symbol of democracy; and
WHEREAS, five people were killed as a result of the attack, including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Biden was the winner of the 2020 presidential election; and
WHEREAS, the peaceful transition of power after a free and fair election is essential for a functioning democracy; and
WHEREAS, local, state, and federal election officials as well as the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security have determined that the 2020 election was fair and the results accurate; and
WHEREAS, President Donald Trump spread unsubstantiated allegations that the 2020 election was not free and fair; and
WHEREAS, these unsubstantiated allegations were knowingly amplified by other political groups and politicians; and
WHEREAS, these unsubstantiated allegations inspired a group of violent fascist protestors to attack the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021, during the certification of the Presidential election.
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol Building is condemned.
AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the allegations about the integrity of our election spread by President Donald Trump and other political figures are unsubstantiated.
AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the Council offers its deepest condolences to the family of Officer Brian Sicknick and honors Officer Sicknick for his dedication and service to our country.
AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the Council wishes to acknowledge and thank the Senators, Congressional representatives and staff persons who returned to finish certifying the presidential election results, and all other employees who returned to work on the grounds or in the U.S. Capitol building in the aftermath of the violent attack.
AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that our democracy is resilient to such acts of domestic terrorism.
AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the peaceful transition of power and commitment to the values memorialized in our Constitution by our founding fathers are hereby acknowledged and affirmed.
