Update from Mayor
Good evening everyone!
I want to start out by thanking everyone who organized, participated in, and
attended this weekend’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade and African
Diaspora Festival on Saturday. These events take a lot of work to put on, and
its gratifying when the public comes out to embrace the sense of community
these events inspire.
We have a couple of other parades coming up: the Memorial Day parade is
on Monday, the 26th and the Annapolis Pride parade is on Saturday the 31st.
We hope to see you all out along the parade route!

This Thursday at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, the County’s Department
of Aging is hosting an “Older Americans Month” celebration with resource
fair, raffle prizes and live entertainment. The event is open to any 55 and up
resident. If you’d like to get the complimentary lunch, you’ll need to register -
visit the County website - it’s free! The time is 11 am to 2 pm on Thursday the
15th.

Mark your calendars for the 28th of May when we will dedicate the Parren J.
Mitchell memorial on the grounds of the Pip Moyer Recreation Center.
Congressman Mitchell was a trailblazer - the first African American to
represent Maryland in the United States House of Representatives, he was a
tireless champion for civil rights, fair housing, and minority businesses. He
was one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
A side note: his nephew, former State Sen. Michael Mitchell, was once
arrested in Annapolis for a sit-in at a segregated restaurant. You know who
he called to bail him out? None other than Roger “Pip” Moyer! Join us at 1
p.m. on the 28th at the Pip Moyer Rec Center for the reveal and dedication!

Next week is Commissioning Week for the United States Naval Academy
class of 2025. First off, to the midshipmen who began their plebe summer in
the middle of the Covid pandemic - Congratulations!
The Blue Angels will arrive on Tuesday at 11 a.m. and do a practice from 1 to
3 p.m. On Wednesday, the Blue Angels will do their show from 1 to 3 p.m.
and then on Friday, the mids will graduate at the Commissioning Ceremony
at Navy Stadium, which is a ticketed event.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be some parking restrictions in
Eastport - to allow emergency vehicles to get all the way through to Horn
Point. Please be alert to posted signage.
In downtown, expect heavy traffic and full garages. Best bet if you’re coming
downtown to see the Blue Angels is to park at Park Place and take the free
magenta shuttle. Please also note that to get onto the Yard, there are new,
stricter requirements for identification. Please visit USNA.edu for details.
The Johnnies held their commencement on Saturday and we also recognize
the St. Johns College class of 2025 as well as our Annapolis High School
graduates. Congrats to all of you!

And lastly, I’d like us to take a moment to remember Charles Robinson
“Sunny” Smith Jr., whom Gary Jobson called “a Giant within the sport of
sailing and a transformative leader for Annapolis Yacht Club.”
Smith passed quietly in his sleep on April 23. He was 98 years old and had
recently been honored as the longest-tenured member in AYC history.
Smith, a 7th generation Annapolitan, got into sailing when he was just 8
years old. A graduate of Annapolis High, he joined AYC at 18 years old before
enlisting in the Army and serving in the Phillipines during World War II. He
served twice as AYC commodore, courageously presiding over the removal of
racial requirements for membership in the early 1970s. He recently got a pin
for having been a member for 80 years!
Smith is survived by his first mate Anne. Let’s share a moment of
remembrance.
Now let’s get on with our meeting.
