A RESOLUTION concerning
Recognition of National Police Week and Honoring Public Safety Week
FOR the purpose of honoring and remembering the City of Annapolis law enforcement and public safety community for the sacrifices they and their families make to keep our City safe.
WHEREAS, May is the month of National Police Week and Police Officer Memorial Day to commemorate those who serve to protect the City of Annapolis;
WHEREAS, National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community; and
WHEREAS, Law enforcement officers swear an oath to uphold the public trust even though, through the performance of their duties, the officers may become targets for senseless acts of violence;
WHEREAS, City of Annapolis law enforcement and public safety officers continue to show up and serve their neighborhoods and communities even through a pandemic and despite the risks to their safety;
WHEREAS, In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that:
1. The City of Annapolis expresses strong support for the law enforcement officers in the City as well as Anne Arundel County, who selflessly and bravely respond to our emergencies day and night to build safer and more secure communities
2. The Council ensures that police officers and other law enforcement personnel, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, are remembered and honored;
3. The City Council encourages City of Annapolis residents to wear blue and give special recognition for the rest of this month to the protectors of our community, the members of the Annapolis Police Department and the Annapolis Fire Department.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that this resolution shall take effect upon passage.
