A RESOLUTION concerning
Authorizing the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade as an Official City of Annapolis Co-Sponsored Event
FOR      the purpose of authorizing the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade as an official co-sponsored City of Annapolis event due to his importance and significance to our country and our community.
 
WHEREAS,      Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., born January 15, 1929, dedicated his life to identifying and righting racial inequality throughout our country; and
 
Whereas,       Dr. King went to India, and met with the family of Mahatma Gandhi and followed Gandhi's teachings; and
 
WHEREAS,      Dr. King became the leader of the national campaign for Civil Rights; and
 
WHEREAS,       when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus and was arrested, Dr. King led the Montgomery bus boycott, which led to the Supreme Court decision ruling that bus segregation was illegal; and
 
WHEREAS,       based on Dr. King's work, the Interstate Commerce Commission banned segregation in interstate travel; and
 
WHEREAS,       on June 23, 1962, Dr. King led a group of 125,000 people in a Freedom Walk in Detroit; and
 
WHEREAS,       on August 28, 1963, Dr. King joined more than 250,000 people in the March on Washington and where he delivered the famous "I Have a Dream" speech; and
 
WHEREAS,      Dr. King was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize which he received for combating racial inequality through nonviolence; and
 
WHEREAS,       Dr. King also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal; and
 
WHEREAS,       in 1983, President Reagan signed the law declaring the third Monday in January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday; and
 
WHEREAS,      in 1989, Maryland was one of the 44 states to adopt the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday; and
 
WHEREAS,      the City of Annapolis observes the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
 
 
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the City of Annapolis shall co-sponsor the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade with the event organizers as an annual event to be held on the third Monday in January in recognition of the significance and enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
 
AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the City shall waive full fees associated with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade.
 
AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade, or its designee, is required to obtain all City permits determined necessary for the safe execution of the Parade.
