A RESOLUTION concerning
Renaming the Section of Center Street
Between the Intersections of Forest Drive and Oaklawn Avenue
FOR the purpose of declaring that the section of Center Street, between the intersections of Forest Drive and Oaklawn Avenue, shall be renamed “Noah Taylor Way” to honor the contributions of Mr. Noah Taylor and his family to the City of Annapolis.
WHEREAS, on November 2, 2016 the Heritage Commission of Annapolis voted unanimously to rename the section of Center Street, between the intersections of Forest Drive and Oaklawn Avenue, to “Noah Taylor Way” to honor the contributions of Mr. Noah Taylor and his family to the City of Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, the Heritage Commission of Annapolis has forwarded its recommendation to the Annapolis City Council for a vote of approval to rename the section of Center Street, between the intersections of Forest Drive and Oaklawn Avenue, to “Noah Taylor Way” to honor the contributions of Mr. Noah Taylor and his family to the City of Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, the renaming of the section of Center Street, between the intersections of Forest Drive and Oaklawn Avenue, is part of an ongoing 100 year celebration of the Walter S. Mills-Parole Elementary School - 1916-2016; and
WHEREAS, almost one century ago, Mr. Noah Taylor purchased the large tract of land on the southern part of Center Street between Forest Drive and Oaklawn Avenue and many of his family members continue to reside in homes built on that land; and
WHEREAS, the Taylor family have been great contributors to the community of Parole and Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, Noah Taylor's daughter-in-law, Thelma Angela Taylor, served admirably as President of the Parole Improvement Association; and
WHEREAS, Noah Taylor's great-grandson, Maurice "Moe" Taylor, is the Artist in Residence for the Greater Parole Community Association and in the Spring of 2016, Moe’s short film “The Journey to Come” was accepted and shown as part of the Annapolis Film Festival’s 4-day celebration; and
WHEREAS, the Taylor family members attended our Annapolis area schools, including Parole Elementary School (now the Walter S. Mills-Parole Elementary School); and
WHEREAS, there are no residences on that section of Center Street, between the intersections of Forest Drive and Oaklawn Avenue; and
WHEREAS, the renaming of this street does not conflict with any other City street names nor Anne Arundel County street names in the Annapolis area.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the section of Center Street, between the intersections of Forest Drive and Oaklawn Avenue, shall be renamed “Noah Taylor Way” to honor the contributions of Mr. Noah Taylor and his family to the City of Annapolis.
AND BT IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that all “Noah Taylor Way” street signage shall bear the former designation of “Center Street” as is the custom on other street signs in the City of Annapolis.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that this resolution shall take effect from the date of its passage.
