A RESOLUTION concerning

 

National Police Week 2024

                     

FOR                     the purpose of honoring the Annapolis Police Department and the City's law enforcement community, including the families of our APD personnel, for their service to the City and recognizing May 9 through May 18, 2024 as National Police Week in the City of Annapolis.

 

WHEREAS,                      National Police Week offers honor, remembrance, and peer support while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty; and

 

WHEREAS,                      In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week; and

 

WHEREAS,                       Peace Officers Memorial Day was included in 1982 with the Memorial Service in Washington, DC, to memorialize officers who lost their lives in the line of duty; and

 

WHEREAS,                      Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge in Washington, DC, to participate in many planned events that honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice; and

 

WHEREAS,                      Our community will always appreciate and commend the risks officers take every day to ensure our community's laws are adequately enforced and that public safety is ensured;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Annapolis City Council does hereby recognize the week of Sunday, May 12, through Saturday, May 18, 2024, as National Police Week in the City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we express our gratitude to the Annapolis Police Department staff and their families for their significant involvement in the community, their efforts to foster trust, camaraderie, and positive relationships among our diverse residents, and for making our community a better place for everyone; and

 

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that this resolution shall take effect upon passage.
