A RESOLUTION concerning
Renaming the Section of Holeclaw Street
Between the Intersections of Carver Street and Bunche Street
FOR the purpose of declaring that the section of Holeclaw Street, between the intersections of Carver Street and Bunche Street, shall be renamed “Hoppy Adams Way” to honor the contributions of Mr. Charles W. “Hoppy” Adams, Jr. to the City of Annapolis.
WHEREAS, on November 2, 2016 the Heritage Commission of Annapolis voted unanimously to rename the section of Holeclaw Street, between the intersections of Carver Street and Bunche Street, to “Hoppy Adams Way” to honor the contributions of Mr. Charles W. “Hoppy” Adams, Jr. to the City of Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, the Heritage Commission of Annapolis has forwarded its recommendation to the Annapolis City Council for a vote of approval to rename the section of Holeclaw Street, between the intersections of Carver Street and Bunche Street, to “Hoppy Adams Way” to honor the contributions of Mr. Charles W. “Hoppy” Adams, Jr. to the City of Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, the renaming of the section of Holeclaw Street, between the intersections of Carver Street and Bunche Street, is part of an ongoing 100 year celebration of the Walter S. Mills-Parole Elementary School - 1916-2016; and
WHEREAS, Charles W. “Hoppy” Adams, Jr. was a distinguished Radio Personality and Executive Vice President of the radio station WANN located in Annapolis, MD for more than 40 years; and
WHEREAS, Charles W. “Hoppy” Adams, Jr. in addition to being a Radio Personality, was an active community and behind-the-scenes Philanthropist; and
WHEREAS, in 1952, Charles W. “Hoppy” Adams, Jr. was hired by Mr. Morris Blum, whom The Baltimore Sun hailed Mr. Blum “as a pioneer in race relations for putting African-American personalities on the air more than five decades ago”; and
WHEREAS, Charles W. “Hoppy” Adams, Jr. was instrumental in attracting nationally and well-known African-American entertainers to Carrs Beach in Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, Charles W. “Hoppy” Adams, Jr. was a life-long Parole resident, who attended our Annapolis area schools, including Parole Elementary School (now the Walter S. Mills-Parole Elementary School), as did his family members, many of whom continue to reside in Parole; and
WHEREAS, there are no residences on that section of Holeclaw Street, between the intersections of Carver Street and Bunche Street; and
WHEREAS, the renaming of this street does not conflict with any other City street names nor Anne Arundel County street names in the Annapolis area.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that the section of Holeclaw Street, between the intersections of Carver Street and Bunche Street, shall be renamed “Hoppy Adams Way” to honor the contributions of Mr. Charles W. “Hoppy” Adams, Jr. to the City of Annapolis.
AND BT IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that all “Hoppy Adams Way” street signage shall bear the former designation of “Holeclaw Lane” as is the custom on other street signs in the City of Annapolis.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ANNAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL that this resolution shall take effect from the date of its passage.
